This is the Waiata from the award winning 'Matariki Lights at Stardome' installation, brought to you by Creature Post (visual), Dan Waipoua (Music) and Huia (lyrics and vocals).

In celebration of our first Matariki for Aotearoa, we were honoured to se the 25,000 tāngata, families and friends, turn up and enjoy what we created, surrounded by nature at Stardome Observatory and Planetarium.

Winner of 2 Best Design Awards in 2022.

"Welcome Matariki, I see you, shimmering away."

Here is the full 6 minutes for you, to navigate your way through the whetū.

The Matariki whetū/stars and whakaaro/meanings are as follows:

Matariki (Alcyone) – people’s health and wellbeing
Tupu-ā-rangi (Atlas) – things that grow up in trees, including fruits, berries and birds
Waipuna-ā-rangi (Electra) – rainfall
Waitī (Maia) – freshwater bodies and foods from these waters
Ururangi (Merope) – the winds
Tupu-ā-nuku (Pleione) – food that is gathered/harvested from the soil
Waitā (Taygeta) – the ocean and foods that come from it
Pōhutukawa (Sterope) – those who have passed on
Hiwa-i-te-rangi (Calaeno) – attainment of goals.

We also mention Rehua in this waiata, who is known as the 'father' with Matariki of the stars/whetū. This aspect is important to our te Ao Māori worldview, as it humanises and connects us to the elements as living, real important parts of our world.
