An adventurer of mixed ancestry walking both worlds, Makereti was a Māori wāhine who educated herself in the Western world, and (in Huia’s perspective) a visionary for mana wāhine who would follow in future generations. The tune, is big with deep electro haka basslines, but not your usual Māori guitar feel... this tune will feature in her next festival rounds, big stadium and forest festival vibes.
Makereti was written after Huia read ‘Makareti, The Old Times’ book at her māmās house in Rotorua. While reading, Makereti Papakuras persona would pop up repeatedly wherever Huia went, from Rotorua at whakarewarewa, to waiting rooms in Tāmaki Makaurau. While writing, Huia really felt the presence of this mana wāhine and it fueled her creativity to produced 2 new te reo Māori waiata.
Huias vocals sway from sweet silky lyrics with peaceful lines, to cranking bass lines and powerful delivery, where Huia sings of the 2 sides of her own life experience as Māori… that is - the sweet welcoming aroha of everyday life, love and connection, then the rising up of iwi when someone ‘brings their war’.
“Ko au, te Papakura, he ariki ahau”
“I am the (geyser) Papakura, I am the chosen one”
“Tenei te pāuaua o te iwi, wanawana te pūkana!”
“This is the resilience of the iwi, fierce is the pūkana!
